Odion Ighalo is the first Nigerian to score for Manchester United
Odion Ighalo becomes the first Nigerian to wear the Manchester United badge and also the first player to score for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men in a Europa League win against Belgian side, Club Brugge (5-0) at Old Trafford.
It was the forwards’s debut start for the Red Devils following his last minute loan transfer from Shanghai Shenhua as a successor for injured attacker, Marcus Rashford.
Ighalo made a shocking return to England following a brief career with Watford, but has had to be calm in a process to score his first goal for the Red Devils.
That barren days has now come to an end, with Ighalo finding the back of the net in his third game, this time against Club Brugge in the Europa League.
With the Portuguese playmaker, Bruno Fernandes opening the scoring in the 27 minutes with a well-taken penalty, the ex-Super Eagles player found himself in the right club at the right moment to give home after Juan Mata’s sublime assist.
Bruno Fernandes moved and twisted on the edge of the penalty arena before throwing a lofted through pass down the right side of the area for Juan Mata. The ex-Valencia man brought it back and Odion Ighalo was the fastest to react and to find the back of the net from close range.
Odion’s popular celebration was quickly showcased, with a clear sense of calmness as Ighalo went through his well-practiced routine.
Thanks to Odion Ighalo’s labour, he is the first Nigerian to score for the Red Devils as well as the first African player to score for the club in all competitions since Eric Bailly against Swansea back in August 2017.
